Abstract

Drug interactions represent a significant concern in clinical practice due to their potential to alter the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of co-administered agents. These interactions can result in therapeutic failure, adverse drug reactions, or toxicity. The increasing complexity of pharmacotherapy, especially in polypharmacy settings, mandates a comprehensive understanding of drug-drug interactions (DDIs) to ensure patient safety. This review explores the types, mechanisms, risk factors, clinical consequences, and preventive strategies associated with DDIs. Emphasis is placed on high-risk populations and commonly implicated drug classes. Enhanced awareness and the integration of interaction-checking tools in clinical decision-making are critical for minimizing adverse outcomes and optimizing therapy.
