Abstract

The emergence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) pathogens has escalated the global need for novel antimicrobial strategies. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs), naturally occurring molecules found in a wide range of organisms, offer a promising alternative to conventional antibiotics. Their unique modes of action, including membrane disruption and immune modulation, make them potent candidates for combating resistant microbes. This article reviews the development of AMPs as therapeutic agents, their mechanisms, challenges in clinical translation, and recent advances in peptide engineering to enhance efficacy and stability. The potential of AMPs to serve as a cornerstone in future antimicrobial therapy is significant, though regulatory and formulation hurdles remain.
