Abstract
Sustained-release (SR) medications have revolutionized drug delivery by enhancing patient compliance, maintaining therapeutic plasma concentrations, and reducing dosing frequency. Over the years, innovative formulation techniques have been developed to overcome challenges such as drug solubility, stability, and release kinetics. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of recent advances in sustained-release formulations, focusing on matrix systems, osmotic pumps, nanotechnology-based carriers, and polymer-based drug delivery platforms. These methods offer tailored release profiles to match the pharmacokinetics of various active pharmaceutical ingredients. The study highlights formulation design strategies, evaluates current industrial practices, and discusses the implications of these advancements on future pharmaceutical development.
